Next Biosciences packages cord blood serum as OptiSerum for your convenient use.

The surface of the eye includes two major territories: the cornea and the conjunctiva. To ensure clear vision, maintain comfort and guard against infections, it’s vital that this ocular surface remains healthy.
Tear formation plays an essential role in the maintenance of a healthy cornea and conjunctiva. Tears are comprised of biological factors called epidermal growth factors (EGF) and Vitamin A which have an important effect on the growth and health of the cells of the ocular surface.
Poor tear film production, or a delay in healing of wounds of the eye, will result in ocular surface diseases. Patients with ocular surface diseases suffer from loss of vision, discomfort and pain, infection, erosion, ulceration, and destruction with scarring of the eye surface.
Umbilical cord blood serum has been found to contain similar growth factors, proteins and Vitamin A to tears. Therefore, umbilical cord blood serum can be used successfully in treatment for ocular surface diseases.

What is OptiSerum used for?

OptiSerum can be used in any condition that may cause poor tear film production or a delay in wound healing of the eye, for example:

  • Severe dry eye syndromes.
  • Chemical burns.
  • Corneal Ulcers and erosions.
  • Neurotrophic keratitis.
  • Post LASEK Surgery.
  • Post corneal transplant.

How is it used?

Your Ophthalmologist will instruct you how to use the OptiSerum eye drops.

Recommended treatment is 1 drop in each affected eye, 4 times daily (1 bottle will last approx. 1 week.)

  • OptiSerum is packaged in 5ml eye dropper bottles.
  • Each bottle contains 4.5ml cord blood serum (20% dilution with BSS).
  • OptiSerum can be kept up to one year in a home freezer (-20°C).
  • Once thawed and in use, the eye drops must be kept refrigerated at 4°C for a maximum of 7 days.
  • Once a bottle is opened, it must be used within 7 days. If the bottle is not finished in 7 days, the remaining drops must be discarded. If the bottle remains opened for longer than 7 days, there’s a chance of bacterial and fungal contamination of the drops.

Sources and Production of OptiSerum

OptiSerum eye drops are prepared from the umbilical cord blood collected from donors during the birthing process. All donors are sourced and counselled through the Netcare Transplant Unit.

All donors sign an informed consent and are screened for the following transmissible diseases: HIV, Hepatitis B & C, HTLV, Syphilis and CMV. The serum is discarded if any of these are positive.

The umbilical cord blood is collected from the placenta after delivery of the baby. The blood is left to clot at room temperature and then centrifuged to separate the serum fraction from the cellular fraction. The serum fraction is diluted to a 20% dilution with BSS Sterile Irrigation Solution and decanted into 5 ml eye dropper bottles using aseptic techniques in a clean room environment. The bottled serum is then frozen at – 80°C for long term storage.

All samples are tested for bacterial and fungal contamination to ensure sterility of the product.

No preservatives are added to the drops.

  • R418 excl. VAT for each 5ml cord blood serum bottle.
  • R 120 courier fee excl. VAT (transported to the doctors rooms on dry ice).
  • If 4 or more bottles of cord blood serum are purchased, delivery is free of charge.

Patient Testimonials

Please note that the following testimonial has been translated from Afrikaans into English:

“Thank you very much for the insightful article. Although I am not familiar with all the medical terms used, I now have a better understanding of the benefits of Cord Blood Serum above autologous Serum. I will read the article again to expand on my informed opinion.

My eyes feel better with every day passing, I can’t even imagine that less than a week ago I had almost lost all hope, and now I am able to go outside, while wearing my sun glasses of course, whereas previously this wasn’t something I could do. To share one of my frustrations I would have to close my eyes while being in the car and then end up suffering from motion sickness, this made my day to day life very difficult. I now feel like I am in control of my life again, and would like to thank Dr ED Jervis for referring me to your product.
I would also like to thank you for all the work you have done developing this product, it has certainly given me my hope back.”
